Build strong relationships

Business is never done between two organizations. It is always done between two people.

In day to day job, you will encounter your peers, boss, your team, vendor, your customer, end-user, your competitor, potential investor, shareholders, and the list is unlimited. Some relationships are short-lived and some stay for long. Irrespective it is important to build strong relationships. Few principles to build strong relationships.

1. Bring value: Relationship is built based on the value that both parties generate. To start with, think through what is the value that you bring on to the table? Is there anyone else can bring better value than you. If so, how do you make yourself more valuable?

2. Trust: Trust is the key to building and surviving the relationship. Even if you have one bit of doubt, speak up and discuss the point that you felt might lead to mistrust.

3. Respect: You can’t treat your vendor and customer in different ways. In that matter anyone that you deal with. For example, for a retailer, a supplier could be a customer as well. A person can’t be given different treatment based on the role they play. Would you keep your feet on the table in front of your investor or boss? If the answer is “No” do not do in front of your team. Do you say “rubbish” when your boss presents? Then do not say these words when your team presents. Respect for each other defines organizational culture.
